Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—5 sc. Rows 2–64 (70, 78, 84): Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 65 (71, 79, 85): With first and
last rows held together, ch 1, working through both thicknesses, slip st in each st across. Do not turn.

Body
Round 1 (right side): With right side
facing and working in ends of rows, ch

Weave tail through every other st of last round, working through last st as needed. Pull gently to close and secure tail.

Pompom
Following pompom maker directions, make 31⁄2″ (9 cm) pompom or make pompom as follows: Wrap yarn around 31⁄2″ (9 cm) piece of heavy cardboard (the more wraps, the fuller the pompom). Gently remove wraps from cardboard. Cut a 12″ (30.5 cm) length of yarn and tie it tightly around center of wraps. Do not cut the ends of this center tie. Cut ends of wraps. Fluff and trim pompom. Use ends of center tie to attach pompom to top of hat.
Weave in ends.
